Yamaha FG-403 | 1981 Made in Japan | Vintage Japanese Acoustic

$650.00Price

This 1981 Yamaha FG-403 is a Japanese-made acoustic guitar built at the famous Nippon Gakki factory. This Yamaha FG-403 features a rare combination of a Solid Ezo Spruce top and Madagascar Rosewood back and sides. The Yamaha FG-403 has a semi-jumbo/concert body shape, a Nato neck, and an Indian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Includes original hard shell case.

The FG-403 was primarily sold in the Japanese domestic market between late 1980 and 1983. The use of premium tonewoods like Solid Ezo Spruce (highly regarded in Japan) and Madagascar Rosewood gives the guitar a refined, brilliant tone comparable to more expensive Brazilian Rosewood models. The semi-jumbo body is comfortable and responsive, particularly suited for fingerstyle playing.

Sound and Tone

The combination of Solid Ezo Spruce and Madagascar Rosewood produces a refined, brilliant tone. Ezo Spruce is a premium Japanese tonewood prized for its clarity and responsiveness. Madagascar Rosewood offers similar tonal properties to Brazilian Rosewood, with complex overtones and strong projection. The semi-jumbo body adds warmth and balance.

Feel and Playability

The semi-jumbo/concert body is smaller and more comfortable than a standard dreadnought. The neck remains straight with light wear on the back. Fretwear present but typical for age. Highly playable and resonant.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition for a 40+ year old instrument. Body is exceptionally well-preserved with minimal to no wear, showcasing the Madagascar Rosewood grain. Headstock has visible nicks and dents along the top edge (fully functional). Neck shows light signs of wear. Evidence of fretwear, typical of a played instrument. Structurally solid with flat top and secure bridge.

Background

The Yamaha FG-403 is a rare JDM model produced for a short period in the early 1980s. It is part of Yamaha's high-end FG series from the Nippon Gakki factory, which is highly regarded among collectors. The use of Solid Ezo Spruce (rather than Sitka) and Madagascar Rosewood makes this model stand out from typical export models.
