Mozztronics BP-8 Valve Bass Preamp Pedal
12AX7 tube running at high voltage. Clean to medium drive. Based on classic F2B circuit.
After making our valve guitar pedals (TD-900, TD-900N and TD-800), we thought—why should guitarists have all the fun? So we created a valve bass preamp pedal based on the classic F2B.
We took the essence of the circuit from the F2B preamp and fitted it inside a pedal. An actual 12AX7 tube runs inside, just as the original preamp does, and we run the tube at proper amp high voltage. We've gone old school here, using circuits originally found in old-time television sets to generate the high voltage for the tube.
The original F2B preamp only had a single volume control. There was no way to run it at higher gains and reduce the output to avoid slamming the power amp, so it was essentially a clean valve preamp. We thought this was a waste of a tube, so we added a gain control and an output volume control. If dirt—or even just a little "grit"—is your thing, turn up the gain and get the lovely sound of a cranked valve amp at sensible volumes. We like to think of this pedal as an extension of your amplifier.
This pedal does clean to medium drive and is great for warming up a bass and adding valve warmth to a solid-state bass rig.
